Ruins
Recently over at the forums of Porkfry a friend requested links to urban exploration websites, such as Opacity. I used to check these sites out a lot, it looks like a very interesting pastime, although I never had a chance to get into it due to not many ruins in south Louisiana that didn't involve practically swimming through swamp to get to, and until recently I forgot about it. Basically you go exploring through abandoned buildings and forgotten areas, like disused hospitals and mental institutions. Obviously this could get a bit dangerous, as many are threatening to collapse and you never know who or what may be in there, and I am not sure how the new homeland security stuff comes in to play...I am sure they probably keep watch on these locations, or at least if anyone happens to see you they will surely report it. But buildings falling apart are very appealing to me, sort of a modern day adventure. I should keep an eye out for places around me I might be able to check out. Possibly in Washington as well, since my Seattle trip in a couple of months is a go.
Picked up way too many graphic novels and books lately, so I won't really get too into that here, except to say Black Hole by Charles Burns is great if you like black and white non-superhero comics. Skeleton Key on dvd was good. Fatal Frame III: The Tormented is great...I have missed playing Fatal Frame games for awhile. I still have the first one, and never finished it as I think I need to start over from scratch, but the new installment ties the first two together with a new story with people from or relating to both the first 2 games. It's great fun, and the ghosts are well done. As is the atmosphere, which is the best part...the odd little things that move for no reason and have nothing to do with items to pick up, the random eerie sounds and ghosts talking...play it with the lights off, alone if you can...VERY spooky, which is half the fun.
And yes, I stole the title for this entry from the old Warren Ellis comic where he killed off most of the Marvel heroes. I wish they would put out a collected edition, as I missed one of the two oversized issues and recall the one I did read as being very good...as is most of his stuff.
I ended up doing nothing for Halloween, other than handing out candy. I did pick up the soundtrack to Night of the Living Dead, the 1990 remake, which I have been looking for for years. Great stuff, makes you feel like you are holed up somewhere fending off zombies.
